Available Projects

“A Day of Hope” is an initiative to mobilize the church to do high value service projects in the most neglected neighborhoods in our county.

“A Day of Hope” is an initiative to mobilize the church to do high value service projects in the most neglected neighborhoods in our county. We are going to do this project the week of October 8 (Saturday, Oct. 1 - Saturday, Oct. 8). We are challenging the church to sign up for a project, block off 4 - 5 hours to serve, and go into a neglected neighborhood just to show the love of Jesus in a practical way.

 The Hannah Home

The Hannah Home is a local home for battered women and children located in Brookwood, AL. They have a total of 5 homes for these women and children. 

Project #1: Hannah Home Porch Painting

Brookwood

Project Assigned

This project is painting the side and front porches. A group has already scraped and primed the porches so they are ready for paint. Supplies will be provided for this project.

Project #2: Hannah Home Shrubbery Trimming

Brookwood

Project Assigned

The shrubbery around all of the homes and the administrative building are in desperate need of trimming. This project was completed by The Church of The Highlands on July 16th.

Project #3: Hannah Home Ceiling Scraping and Painting

Brookwood

Project Assigned

The Hope House has a large bedroom that needs the ceiling texturing scraped off and repainted. Supplies will be furnished on this project.

 

Project #4: Hannah Home Deck Improvements

The decks on all 5 homes need reinforcement attention (balusters secured, a few boards replaced, etc.). Supplies will be furnished for this project. 

Project #5: Hannah Home Deck Staining

The decks on all 5 homes need to be stained. This project was started last year and is about 70% completed. Supplies will be furnished for this project.

Project #6: Hannah Home Landscaping

All 5 homes are in need of general landscaping (mowing, weed-eating, hedging, removing limbs from around the drive, etc.). Teams will need to bring mowers and equipment necessary to complete these jobs.

 

Project #7: Hannah Home Dormer Repairs

Brookwood

The dormers on the main building have been leaking and are in need of attention. Fascia and caulking may be necessary. 

Project #8: Hannah Home Cross-tie

Brookwood

Project Assigned

Cross-ties need to be removed and replaced around the property. Partnership money is available for this project.

Project #9: Hannah Home Deck Replacement

Brookwood

The top of the deck at The Lennie Oden House was removed exposing part of the house. The exposed area needs to be closed in, weather damage needs to be repaired on the inside of the home, and the top of the deck needs to be replaced and sealed. This is a bigger job that may be divided into several different projects. Partnership money is available for these projects.

 

Project #10: Hannah Home Termite Damage Repairs

The Drummond House has sustained some termite damage on the main beam on the foundation. The beam needs to be replaced the entire length of the house. 

Project #11: Hannah Home Window Replacements

Brookwood

The Drummond House needs windows replaced. We need a group that can provide installation on the windows, the windows will be provided. As much help as we can receive on funding this project will be greatly appreciated.

Project #12: Hannah Home New Home Opening

Project Assigned

The Hannah Home has a home that is in need of attention inside and out. This home will need the decks stained, several rooms painted, yard work, and general landscaping. This project would be great for a large team of 50 plus people. 


Project #13 Hay Court

Hay Court is a local Housing Authority community.

Project Assigned

The community's playground area needs attention. Weeds need to be pulled, new mulch, pressure washing, and possibly new sealer.


Dixon Home

Mia Dixon is a precious 14-year-old with cerebral palsy. Her father passed away in 2014 and her brother is in the military. We helped build a handicap ramp for Mia last year.

Project #14: Dixon Interior Home Repairs

Her home needs a few interior repairs. There is an electric plug that needs to be put back into the wall, 2-3 small holes in the wall and ceiling, and a 2-part door repaired.

Project #15: Dixon Exterior Home Repairs

Mia's family needs help in a few exterior repairs. The mailbox needs to be cemented to the ground, a window unit cemented in the group, and there is a fascia that has a few rotted spots.

Project #16: Dixon Kitchen Plumbing

The gasket attached to the bottom of their kitchen sink has been leaking and has ruined the wood under the sink. The attachments on the sink need to be replaced and the wood needs to be removed and replaced.


Clara Verner

Clara Verner is a home for senior adults, on the edge of the UA campus, off Jack Warner Parkway.

Project #17: Clara Verner Womens Day

Clara Verner is a home for senior adults, on the edge of the UA campus, off Jack Warner Parkway. We are looking for between 3-7 students (girls) to go out and give the ladies there some pampering...do their nails and make them feel special!

Clara Verner is a home for senior adults, on the edge of the UA campus, off Jack Warner Parkway. This project is simply doing arts and crafts with the residents for a couple of hours. We will need between 3-7 students for this project.

Clara Verner is a home for senior adults, on the edge of the UA campus, off Jack Warner Parkway. This project is for the vocally talented! We are looking for students to go out and sing with the residents for a couple of hours. Looking for between 3-7 students for this project.

This project is general pick up of the road from Crescent Ridge Road to the Crescent East Apartments. This project would be great for a group of students (around 6-15 students). All you will need is large bags/contractor bags.

This project is general pickup around the Crescent East Apartments grounds. This is a great project for students (around 6-15 students) with adult supervision. It would be great to connect with the residents along the way. 


Wood Village

Wood Village is a mobile home community in Tuscaloosa with many needs.

Project #25: Pruitt Ramp Staining

Ms. Pruitt is a precious elderly woman who is disabled, almost bedridden. Last year we were able to build her a nice handicap ramp. The ramp needs to be stained and sealed. This would be a great project for students. Partnership funding is available.

Ms. Pruitt has an 8X8 deck at the top of her ramp that is almost completely uncovered. She needs it be covered so she can go outside and sit in her wheelchair. This project will involve installing four posts, framing the room, and covering it with tin. Partnership funding is available.

Mr. Latham is a kind man that suffers from some non-physical disabilities. Last year we were able to build a handicap ramp for Don and now it needs to be stained. This is a great project for students. Partnership funding is available.

Project #29: Carson External Door

Ms. Carson has a lot of problems on her external door. It leaks when it rains and doesn’t close completely. She needs a small hydraulic arm that closes her door replaced. She also needs the caulking around the metal threshold at the bottom. She currently has duct tape on both sides to keep water out. She also has a small spot where her countertop is peeling up. A small amount of glue would be beneficial.

Habitat House

A sweet elderly couple in Tuscaloosa is in need of some work the outside of their home. Their home was hit by the April 27 tornado.

Bryant High School

Paul W. Bryant High School serves grades 9 through 12 and is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, forming part of the Tuscaloosa City Schools.

Project #35: Bryant Interior Beautification

The interior of the school needs some attention to give the faculty, students, and visitors something nice to look at on a day to day basis. There needs to be small trees added around the school, indoor potted plants added to the foyer, and general “beautification” done. Partnership funding is available for this project..

The courtyard area of the school needs general landscaping. There are dozens of crepe myrtles and small trees that need to be trimmed and possibly mulch put down. Supplies will be provided for this project.

This project is repainting the elephant prints on the pavement, school spirit stripes, and driving lanes in the parking lot of the school.


Christian Ministry Center

The Christian Ministry Center offers food and clothing to families in need here in Tuscaloosa. 

Project #38: CMC Painting

The facilities are in need of the two main rooms being painted beige. This will involve some picture removal. Partnership funding for supplies. This project will need to be completed after business hours (Monday - Thursday mornings 8am - noon).

This project is fixing a leak at the bowl of the toilet in the women’s bathroom. This is not a major repair. 

Project #40: CMC Clothes

The CMC volunteers are in need of help with hanging a large number of clothes. This project would be great for a WMU group or a Sunday School group with around 6-10 people. (Monday - Thursday mornings 8am - noon)

This project is simply weed-eating around the CMC building and the Good Samaritan Clinic. This project would be great for around 1 - 2 people. This project will need to be completed after business hours (not Monday - Thursday mornings 8am - noon).
